DERBY SPOILS FOR HSV!

Pauli won this season’s first derby 3-2 but HSV have got their revenge with a 2-1 victory of their own at home. It also has huge repercussions across Bundesliga 2 with the Red Shorts up to third and only three points off leaders Pauli. Up to four teams could leapfrog HSV as the matchday goes on, but the Boys in Brown will be looking more nervously over their shoulder with Darmstadt now able to take first place from them with a point at Ingolstadt tomorrow.

BURGSTALLER DENIED!

Pauli's main man tries to get his side back level with a curling effort from left of centre, but Heuer Fernandes reacts well and gets down to parry to his left.

KITTEL TO JATTA

Bakery Jatta has three goals this season, with this his first since November, but all of them have been set up by Sonny Kittel. He's now on 10 assists for the season and the outright division leader.

GAP REDUCED

When Pauli were in front, they were going nine points clear of HSV. As it stands, HSV are third and only three off their city rivals, who are winless in three even before today's game.

HSV AHEAD!

They probably deserve it on the balance of play and the hosts are finally ahead. A Heuer Fernandes clearance isn't controlled by Burgstaller. One pass from Kittel later and HSV are in behind with Jatta sent down the right. The ball sits up nicely for him and he fires across Vasilj and inside the far post.

Not long after bringing up his ninth assist of the season to go level with Pauli's Kyereh at the top of the league standings, Sonny Kittel will miss the trip to Darmstadt in a fortnight through suspension.

HAMBURG HEADS ABOVE THE REST

Both teams have scored from headers today, meaning they both Hamburg clubs have eight headed goals each this season.

ALIDOU!

A very lively 20-year-old and he almost gives HSV the lead as he gets onto Jatta's low cross. Probably offside, but he fails to beat Vasilj in any case.
58'

HSV LEVEL!

No mistake this time for the hosts. It's that corner that leads to the goal, Kittel pinging it into the six-yard box for captain Sebastian Schonlau to head home before a Pauli defender can even react. All square in Hamburg!
57'

AGAIN FOR GLATZEL

Alidou goes very well up against Paqarada and digs out a cross to the far post. It's headed down for Glatzel, who spins but finds his path blocked by the post.
52'

BURGSTALLER IN...

Hartel with the through ball with Burgstaller timing his run perfectly. The angle is tight and he can't beat Heuer Fernandes, but does get a corner out of it.

A first warning shot of this half as the HSV midfielder lets fly from a good 25 yards. Vasilj parries to safety.

AND MORE CHANCES!

Jatta is slipped in and Vasilj does very well sliding out at his feet. But the ball comes straight back into the box to Glatzel with his back to goal. He goes for it first time but blasts over with Vasilj not yet back on his line.

CLOSE AGAIN!

Vuskovic gets his head to a free-kick into the box. It's a good contact and bounces awkwardly in front of Vasilj, but the Pauli keeper does well to tip the ball wide.

NECK AND NECK FOR EXPECTED GOALS

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
But Pauli have made their fewer chances count so far.

There's another check going on for a potential Pauli penalty after Ohlsson and Alidou came together in the box, but referee Stegemann isn't called to take a look.

PAULI LEAD!

Burgstaller's four-goal drought is over and the league leaders take the lead at the Volksparkstadion. Smith's free-kick is deep and looks to be wasted, but Amenyido nods it back across the face of goal, where Burgstaller is alert at the far post to head in. Quick check for a possible handball but the goal is given!

SO CLOSE!

Kittel has delivered six set pieces leading to goals this season and almost makes it seven with an in-swinging corner. Jatta gets his head to it at the front post but can't quite direct it inside the far stick as the ball fizzes just wide.

NEUER IN DISGUISE?

It's always so interesting (and sometimes nerve-jangling) to see Daniel Heuer Fernandes in action. He seems to spend more time out of his box than he does in it, trying to be that 11th outfield player. He's also very confident on the ball even in his own area.

MUHEIM!

Pauli have hardly got out of their own third and the chances are stacking up for HSV. They fail to clear their lines here and the ball comes out to Muheim right of centre. He hits it first time on his left with the slightest deflection off a Pauli leg just taking it over the crossbar.

WON'T COUNT

Third time almost the charm for the hosts as Jatta runs in behind down the right and cuts back for Glatzel to seep home, but the linesman's flag had gone up well before.

NOW HEYER!

Double chance for the HSV defender as he gets his head to a corner to the far post. He plants it at Vasilj who'd scrambled across to his post but then puts the rebound wide from close range.

ALIDOU!

Huge, huge chance only three minutes in for the HSV youngsters. Reis is played in and cuts back from the right towards the penalty spot where Alidou is coming in completely unchallenged, but he fails to even hit the target as he blasts over.

WATCH: TOP 5 DERBY GOALS

SAFE HANDS IN HEUER FERNANDES

A key figure in HSV's midweek, DFB Cup, penalty shootout win against Cologne, goalkeeper, Daniel Heuer Fernandes, is excelling in his return to action following a knee injury that kept the custodian sidelined for over two months. Keen to get his hands working in one more Stadtderby, the former Portugal U21 international said if today's encounter, "This is a game with explosive possibilities. Our style of play is to always be brave. If we perform as we can, we can win."

EYES ON GUIDO

Pauli's 32-year-old sharpshooter, Guido Burgstaller, has been flourishing this season for the Boys in Brown, scoring 14 goals and providing four assists during a campaign in which he has been ever present. The ex-Austria international will no doubt play an important role in today's derby, and he recently summed up why things are working so well for he and his teammates in 2021/22. "We have a great spirit in the team in which everyone works for one another and supports one another," the striker told Austrian site ligaportal.at. "A success like the (DFB Cup) one against Dortmund would not have been possible without that."

PREVIOUS MEETING

HSV may lead the way in terms of overall victories in this historical fixture, the Rothosen boasting 68 victories to Pauli's 22. However, what makes this evening's game all the more intriguing is that the current 2 Bundesliga leaders have bossed the sides' second division meetings, winning four of seven and drawing two. The Braun-Weißen also took the spoils in the last Stadtderby, winning 3-2 on Matchday 3 last August.

PAULI VIEW

Meanwhile, St. Pauli boss, Timo Schultz, is also leading a group of players into today's second-city derby high on morale after their incredible 2-1 cup success against Borussia Dortmund last Tuesday. "With a win in the bag, everything seems easier and you recover a bit faster," Schultz said of his players' efforts to be in top condition today. In terms of how the Kiezkicker's will approach their trip to the Volksparkstadion, the visiting tactician said, "We're not the kind of team to sit back and wait and hope something comes our way. We want to be active – both on and off the ball – and that's how we aim to play."

HAMBURG VIEW

Hamburg coach, Tim Walter, said his players had gotten extra-time and penalties out of their legs following their famous midweek DFB Cup triumph against Bundesliga side Cologne and were fully ready for today's derby. "We definitely have the energy for it," the 46-year-old insisted. "The will, readiness and courage for this special game are 100% there; the boys just have to let it out on the pitch." the tactician continued, adding, "Games like the one in Cologne on Tuesday, or now the derby, are exactly what you can't get enough of as a footballer."

PAULI TEAM NEWS

Timo Schultz also makes just the one personnel change from what Pauli will argue was an even bigger cup coup after knocking out holders Dortmund. That sees first-choice goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj return for Dennis Smarsch. Otherwise it’s the same 10 outfield players, with James Lawrence again captaining the side.

HSV TEAM NEWS

Tim Walter makes just one change from the side that beat Cologne on penalties in the DFB Cup during the week, with Bakery Jatta coming in for Manuel Wintzheimer.
