The 2012/13 season ended in disappointment, however, as BVB finished second in the Bundesliga and lost out to Bayern in the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley.

Hummels would, though, reach the summit of world football in July 2014, his commanding displays helping Germany to a fourth FIFA World Cup triumph. The defender scored twice en route to the final: against Porugal in the group stages and the only goal of the game against France in the quarter finals.

Both Dortmund and Hummels endured frustrating campaigns in 2014/15, but the defender returned to his best with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel (l.) in summer 2015, producing a number of impressive displays as BVB ended the 2015/16 season in second place.
