Douglas Costa's career in pictures
Instant hit: Douglas Costa has been one of FC Bayern München's key weapons since joining the club in summer 2015.
After a brief stint at EC Novo Hamburgo in New Hamburg, a city consolidated by German settlers in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul, Costa made a name for himself when he turned professional at local powerhouses Gremio in Porto Alegre.

After showing much promise for Gremio, he was rewarded with a move to Ukrainian club FC Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2010, making his debut for the club against Fulham FC in the UEFA Europa League.
Bundesliga crowds became more acquainted with Costa (l.) when Shakhtar were drawn against Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League in 2012/13. BVB progressed 5-2 on aggregate.

Domestically, Costa's (l.) time in Ukraine could have hardly been more successful, as he won five consecutive league titles (2010-2014) and three Ukrainian Cups (in 2012,2013 and 2014).
In the Champions League, fans in Germany once again came across him when Shakhtar played Bayern in the last 16 in February 2015. Costa and his team were hammered 7-0, but the Brazilian left a strong impression on the Bavarians, who swooped to sign him at the end of the season.

After making his international debut in late 2014 against Turkey, Costa (r.) was selected in the Brazil squad for the 2015 Copa America. He started the tournament well, scoring a last-minute winner against Peru in the group stages...
...but the knockout rounds brought disappointment, as he missed his spot-kick in a quarter-final penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.
After some extended leave following the Copa America, Costa represented Bayern for the first time in their pre-season tour of China in mid-July.
Despite his late arrival to pre-season, Costa was raring to go by the start of the league season, and in the official Bunesliga opener, he terrorised Hamburger SV, scoring once and assisting another in a 5-0 win.

Oktoberfest rolled around quickly in Munich, and Costa took every opportunity to get involved with local Bavarian customs.

On Matchday 12 Costa (c.) was once again the dominant figure for Bayern in a 4-0 win over VfB Stuttgart. He scored his second league goal of the season and assisted Arjen Robben with a bursting run and exquisite piece of skill to flummox the covering defender, helping Bayern to an 11th win in 12 league games.
