St. Martin/Passeier – Germany held the first practice session of their week-long training camp in Italian South Tyrol on Thursday, with Bastian Schweinsteiger completing a special individual programme.
The 29-year-old FC Bayern München and national team vice-captain is still recovering from the patella tendon injury that ruled him out of last weekend's DFB Cup final victory over Borussia Dortmund in Berlin. Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick said Schweinsteiger will continue with his separate fitness regime over the coming days, with medical staff monitoring his progress “very sensitively.”
23 of head coach Joachim Löw's provisional 27-strong squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil are currently at the Alpine training camp with Schweinsteiger's FC Bayern clubmates Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm due to fly in on Friday. Real Madrid's Sami Khedira and Per Mertesacker of Arsenal FC are the other two players still to make up the numbers.
