Schmelzer receives injury boost

  • Marcel Schmelzer has passed himself fit to play after being withdrawn from Germany's win over Austria after injury
  • The 25-year-old was caught by a blow to the face and had to be substituted, but should now feature against the Faroe Islands on Tuesday
  • Meanwhile, his Dortmund team-mate Neven Subotic (r.) has withdrawn from the Serbia squad after their failure to qualify for World Cup 2014

Munich - Germany head coach Joachim Löw has been boosted by the news that Borussa Dortmund defender Marcel Schmelzer should be fit to face the Faroe Islands in Germany's FIFA Wold Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old left-back had to be withdrawn from the 3-0 win over Austria in Munich on Friday evening after taking a blow to the face in an aerial duel with VfB Stuttgart forward Martin Harnik.

However, fears of a lengthy injury were allayed when Schmelzer himself gave the medical team the all-clear.

Subotic back home

Meanwhile, his BVB team-mate Neven Subotic has withdrawn from the Serbia squad early after the team's failure to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

A 1-1 draw with group rivals Croatia ended any chance Serbia had of reaching next summer's showpiece even, and Subotic has apparently decided to return to Dortmund early in order to commit himself fully to his club duties.
