Germany’s record DFB Cup winners FC Bayern München sealed their berth in the last eight of this season’s competition after a 1-0 win over SV Darmstadt 98, while Bundesliga 2 side 1. FC Heideneheim joined them in the quarter-finals with victory over FC Erzgebirge Aue.

FC Bayern München 1-0 SV Darmstadt 98

Goals: Alonso (40')

Pep Guardiola fielded a strong line-up against the team 12th in the Bundesliga, with Thomas Müller, Robert Lewandowski and Xabi Alonso all starting for the home side. Darmstadt set up predictably tightly, looking to restrict the home side’s time on the ball and launch the odd counter-attack themselves, and their resilience was only broken by a moment of inspiration from Alonso.

The former Spain international collected a clearance with his first touch and, with his second, sent a vicious, dipping half-volley into the top corner from all of 25 yards. Philipp Lahm and Müller might have added to the scoreline in the second half, but Guardiola will be delighted his team are in the next round of a competition the Bavarians have won a record 17 times.

Bayern: Neuer - Kimmich, Javi Martinez, Boateng, Rafinha - Xabi Alonso - Lahm (Rode 87’), Müller, Vidal (Thiago 66’), Coman (Kirchhoff 90’) - Lewandowski

Darmstadt: Mathenia - Garics, Sulu, Rajkovic, Junior Diaz - Niemeyer (Stroh-Engel 87’), Kempe (Sailer 81’), Gondorf, Vrancic (Rausch 76’), Heller - Wagner

FC Erzgebirge Aue 0-2 1. FC Heidenheim

Goals: 0-1 Feick (48'), 0-2 Schnatterer (54')

The visitors have been on many peoples’ lips after their heading heroics in the team dressing room went viral this week, and – perhaps inevitably – they took the lead through a headed effort from full-back Arne Feick.

Talismanic skipper Marc Schnatterer then made sure of the result with a controlled volley not long afterwards, ensuring Heidenheim become the first non-Bundesliga side to reach this season’s last eight and setting up the club's first ever appearance in the quarter-finals.

Aue: Männel - Rizzuto, Susac, Breitkreuz, Hertner - Riese, Tiffert (Samson 74’) - Skarlatidis (Könnecke 63’), Kvesic (Handle 57’), Adler - Wegner

Heidenheim: Müller - Strauß, Göhlert, Beermann, Feick - Theuerkauf, Titsch-Rivero - Leipertz (Wiedemann 86’), Skarke (Schnatterer 46’) - Grimaldi, Voglsammer (Halloran 46’)
