Prague - Ten-man Germany had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Serbia in their opening game at the UEFA U-21 European Championships in the Czech Republic.

Serbia's Filip Djuricic stroked home the opener after eight minutes but Emre Can was able to equalise for Horst Hrubesch's side, who saw out a draw despite SC Freiburg's Christian Günter seeing red in the second half.

Nightmare start, Can restores parity

Germany began the game as one of the favourites to win the tournament, but they got off to a nightmare start at the Generali Arena, as Djuricic, on the books of 1. FSV Mainz 05 but most recently on loan at English club Southampton FC, nutmegged VfL Wolfsburg's Robin Knoche and powered into the box to finish with aplomb.

It was a shock to the system for Hrubesch's men, but they were level shortly afterwards thanks to a superb strike from Emre Can, the former Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern München man finding the corner with a sweet low strike. The second half was an even affair with both sides going close to a winner, although Germany left the pitch the marginally happier side after avoiding defeat despite Günter's dismissal for two bookings.
