Vaclav Kadlec's twelfth-minute finish opened the scoring, before fans' hero Alexander Meier headed home a Tranquillo Barnetta corner after 53 minutes. The Eagles closed the game out professionally to remain top of Group F.
Kadlec on fire
An Eintracht Frankfurt side, in front of a fanatical packed house in the Commerzbank Arena, began the contest dripping with aggression and intent. Meier and Barnetta both had early chances before the Eagles’ man of the moment, Kadlec, met a parried Meier header to poke home in the 12th minute for his second goal in three Europa League games.
Marco Russ and Johannes Flum were dominating in midfield, and frustrating their Israeli opposition both defensively and going forward. They were imposingly effective to the extent that Tel-Aviv midfielder Tal Ben Haim received a second yellow card and his subsequent marching orders for handball in the 35th minute, and his absence only increased the pressure on his side before half time, with Bastian Oczipka and Russ almost adding to the lead.
Alexander the Great
Eight minutes after the restart, it was 2-0 - and it could only have been created by one man. Barnetta whipped in a wicked corner which was met at the near post by Meier, the veteran forward making no mistake in nodding home. Barnetta was enchanting the home fans, almost releasing Kadlec with a perfect pass, who was then set up by captain Sebastian Jung’s sliding ball and should have done better.
The closing stages became the Kadlec procession, once he was denied superbly by Juan Pablo in the Tel-Aviv goal, and ten minutes from time his late run coincided with Jung’s pass, only to see the ball fly over the bar. No matter, Frankfurt were soaring, with 40,000 fans in raptures.
