Bayer 04 Leverkusen overcame a stubborn home defence to seal a deserved 1-0 win away at Norwegian side Rosenborg Trondheim on Matchday 2 in the UEFA Europa League, their first in the competition this season.

After an entertaining first half had ended goalless, Leverkusen stepped up the pressure and, with enough firepower on the pitch, Stefan Kießling eventually breached the home defence to move his team to four points in Group K.

Chances at both ends

In front of an expectant home crowd, Rosenborg began the game on the front foot and Bernd Leno had to get down low to push away a drive inside the first five minutes. The Werkself were not without their own threat in attack, however, with Renato Augusto and Junior Fernandes both testing keeper Daniel Orlund with speculative efforts.

Leverkusen then improved, with Simon Rolfes and Lars Bender gaining the upper hand in the midfield battle and Fernandes holding the ball up well. It was the Chilean, on his first start for the club, who then had the next opportunity, crashing a shot off the crossbar with Orlund beaten. There was still time for Manuel Friedrich to send a free header wide and for Leno to pull off a smart stop to deny Rade Prica at the other end before the break.

Leverkusen turn the screw

The second half began with nothing the like the amount of chances in the opening period, but it was the away side that got into their stride quickest after the interval. Augusto flashed a drive wide of Orlund's post, before Andre Schürrle was then denied from close range after Bender's delightful through ball.

Rosenberg's season has been underway since March, and they seemed to tire as the game wore on. Consequently, the chances came more readily for Sami Hyypiä's team and after Sidney Sam and Bender had both been denied, up popped substitute Kießling to poke in the winner from a yard out.

The margin of victory might have been more comfortable had Gonzalo Castro not struck the post, but it mattered little as Leverkusen secured a well-earned victory.
