Gladbach laid siege to the Wolfsburg goal in the opening stages, with Koen Casteels diving full-stretch to deny Lars Stindl. Gladbach's skipper struck the right-hand post following a mistake by Josuha Guilavogui, but the Wolfsburg defender recovered well to clear Andre Hahn's follow-up off the line. The Foals' persistence was rewarded, however, as Jannik Vestergaard powered in Andreas Christensen's cut-back after Wolfsburg failed to clear their lines from a Jonas Hofmann corner.

Casteels kept Christensen and Hahn at bay early in the second half, but Wolfsburg responded in kind and were soon level. Mario Gomez dumbfounded the Gladbach defence with an outrageous first touch to kill Riechedly Bazoer's cross, before calmly tucking away his 16th Bundesliga goal of the season. The Wolves had their tails up as Guilavogui headed over, but a lengthy stoppage due to inclement weather blunted their charge and - with Hamburg holding Schalke to a draw - means their fight against the drop will go down to the final day.

Man of the Match

Who else but Gomez? The Germany international led the line superbly and scored the goal that puts survival in Wolfsburg's hands.

Talking Point

The equation is simple for Wolfsburg: avoid defeat in next weekend's relegation play-off within a play-off against 16th-placed Hamburg, and they will be safe.
