- Guilavogui breaks vertebrae in his neck.
- Midfielder to undergo further tests back in Germany.
- Wolfsburg lose pre-season friendly to Sporting Lisbon.
VfL Wolfsburg's pre-season preparations suffered a major blow on Saturday with the news that midfielder Josuha Guilavogui broke vertebrae in his neck during the club's 2-1 friendly defeat to Sporting Clube de Portugal.
The 25-year-old, who signed a permanent deal with the Wolves this summer following a successful loan spell from Atletico Madrid, was replaced by Amara Conde in the 65th minute in Lisbon after remaining prone on the pitch following a challenge. He was immediately taken to hospital, where an MRI scan revealed the diagnosis.
Guilavogui was able to return to Germany with the rest of the squad wearing a stabilising neck brace, and will undergo further examination upon arrival back in Wolfsburg. It is not yet known how long he will be sidelined for.
"The doctors said I had some fortune in my misfortune," Guilavogui told the club's official website. "I don’t accuse my opponent of doing any wrong, it was just an unlucky situation. Now I hope the healing process goes positively and that I recover as quickly as possible, so that I am available for the team again."
