- Hummels, Götze, Bartra, Dembele and Schürrle all set to make competitive debuts for new clubs.
- New signings have had an instant impact in previous Supercups.
- Dortmund host Bayern in this year's edition on 14 August.
Received wisdom states that new signings usually need a few weeks at the very least to get used to their new club and hit top form.
Koen Casteels joined VfL Wolfsburg on 1 July 2015 from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. With regular No1 Diego Benaglio injured, Casteels filled in between the posts for the DFB Cup winners against Bayern on 1 August. With the score tied at 1-1 the match went to a penalty shootout, and the Belgian kept out Xabi Alonso's spot-kick to help the Wolves win 5-4.
Bayern snapped up Mario Mandzukic from Wolfsburg on 26 June 2012 following the striker's impressive displays for Croatia at UEFA EURO 2012. His first competitive game for the club was in the Supercup against Dortmund on 12 August, and he needed just six minutes to open the scoring en route to a 2-1 triumph.
Just a year earlier, Mandzukic's international team-mate Ivan Perisic also had an instant impact for Borussia Dortmund – although he would probably rather forget all about it. On 23 July, exactly two months after penning his deal with BVB, Perisic played in the Supercup against Dortmund's arch-rivals FC Schalke 04. After the game ended goalless, the tie went to penalties – with Perisic crucially missing his effort to allow the Royal Blues a 4-3 win.
SV Werder Bremen's Vladimir Beschastnykh had one of the most memorable debuts ever, scoring after just two minutes against none other than Bayern. Not only did the Russian's strike pave the way for a 3-1 triumph for the Green-Whites, it remains the competition's fastest ever goal.
The case of Jürgen Wegmann is one that is particularly pertinent to Hummels and Götze, who switched between Bayern and Dortmund this summer. Wegmann rejoined BVB in July 1989 after two seasons at Bayern and promptly scored against his former employers in a 4-3 victory. The striker remains the competition's all-time top scorer with three goals (alongside Arjen Robben).
