Flo 'The Scout' and JT 'The Coach' may have enjoyed watching the Supercup, but as they struggled to keep their minds from wandering onto players' shoe sizes and pasta, 'The Expert' here was busy poring over the data to help you win the Official Fantasy Bundesliga!
About Matt: Official Fantasy Bundesliga Expert Matt has always been a bit of a numbers geek. As a kid he had a giant poster of Sesame Street’s The Count above his bed, while his current ringtone is Hip To Be Square by Huey Lewis and the News. Our resident number cruncher will provide you with key facts and stats throughout the season.
Spend big, but spend wisely
FC Bayern München striker Robert Lewandowski may be the game's joint-most expensive player with an in-game fantasy value of 15m, but having scored a league-high 30 Bundesliga goals in 2015/16, it is likely to be money well spent. Teammate Douglas Costa has the same value - and having provided four goals and nine assists last term the Brazil winger might look like a similarly shrewd signing. However, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are both on the comeback from injury. Will Costa enjoy the 27 appearances he did last term? Remember: if they don't play, they can't score you fantasy points!
Keep an eye on the fixture list
SV Werder Bremen's Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro has scored 190 Bundesliga goals - a record for a foreign-born player in Germany's top division. But did you know that 19 of those goals - fully ten percent - have come against Hamburger SV alone?! Bremen travel to the Volkparkstadion to take on the Red Shorts in the season's first Nordderby on Matchday 12. It would be wise to have Pizarro in your line-up before kick-off!
Fluctuating player values
Remember, Costa might not cost you 15m all season! Player values will fluctuate as the season progresses. From Week 1, there will be an average score for each position based on all players who play at least 30 minutes. Your player's value will go up by 250,000 if he scores 10 or more points above average, and down by the same amount if he underperforms to the same degree* (see full table).
A total of 100,000 gets knocked of a player's value if they fail to feature at all. Costa is still running off a thigh injury whilst Ribery was preferred for the recent 2-0 Supercup victory over Dortmund. At 33, Ribery's ability to see out the season is increasingly under the microscope, though. The upshot: if Costa is ready to seize his chance in the Rückrunde, it's possible he could cost you nearly 2 million less than he would have done at the start of the season!
Don't be afraid the wield the axe
Unlike the coaches in the dugout who have to respect real-life transfer windows, in the Official Fantasy Bundesliga you can swing the axe at any time! Recent Dortmund signing Andre Schürrle managed an impressive nine goals in his final 14 games last term, but VfL Wolfsburg first witnessed a goalless Hinrunde from the FIFA World Cup winner. Why wait for the goals? If a player hits a hot streak you can always buy him back in a few weeks!
