Nobody has scored more goals in the opening day of a Bundesliga season than Klaus Fischer. The former TSV 1860 München, FC Schalke 04, 1. FC Köln and VfL Bochum 1848 striker managed this feat 13 times in his 22-year professional career.

Now 66 years old, Fischer remains an Schalke legend - he represented the club for 11 years - and is the second-highest scorer in Bundesliga history, with 268 goals in 535 games.

With the new Bundesliga schedule released on 29 June, Fischer seems like the perfect man to speak to. In this exclusive interview with bundesliga.com, the 1982 Bundesliga runner-up opens up on the secret to his success.

bundesliga.com: Mr. Fischer, the new schedule for the coming Bundesliga season will be published next week. How closely did you pay attention to your first opponents as a player?

Klaus Fischer: I was obviously interested in who our first opponents would be. We never wanted a particularly strong opponent on the opening day, but we did want someone we could beat.

bundesliga.com: You are the player with the most Matchday 1 goals in Bundesliga history, with 13 goals in 16 opening day games, whilst you scored at least once in Matchday 1 seven times. How do you explain these two records?
