Reigning Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München will kick off the 2016/17 season with a home game on Friday 26 August, but before then there are plenty of important events to mark in the calendar.

3 – 26 June: A total of ten Bundesliga players are involved at the Copa America Centenario in the USA. Current title-holders Chile, who lifted the trophy on home turf last year, have Bayern's Arturo Vidal, Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Charles Aranguiz and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's Eduardo Vargas in their ranks at the tournament.

10 June – 10 July: There are numerous Bundesliga representatives at UEFA EURO 2016, and the nations with most members from Germany's top flight are Austria (15), Germany (13) and Switzerland (11). Click here for a club-by-club guide to which players are participating.

18 June:
DFB Cup first round draw. Bayern won the competition in May after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on penalties in the final in Berlin.

29 June: The DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga) will publish the fixture schedules for the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 on 29 June. The announcement will once again be made within an online presentation. The site, which is already online, also offers a great deal of additional information. Reaction to the schedule release will be collected on twitter using the hashtag #bundesligaschedule.

28 July and 4 August: Hertha Berlin will take part in the third qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League. Their first-leg tie will be on Thursday 28 July, the return fixture on 4 August. So far only two potential opponents have been confirmed: Turkey's Istanbul Başaksehir FK and Romania's Pandurii Targu. If Hertha win they will progress to the play-offs on 18 August and 25 August for a chance to reach the group stage proper.

3 – 21 August: The Olympic Games will take place in Rio de Janeiro, with several youngsters expected to be involved at the U-23 football tournament. The last time Germany won an Olympic medal for football was at Seoul 1988.

5 August: The new Bundesliga 2 season kicks off, once again starting a couple of weeks earlier than the top flight.

14 August: Bayern and Dortmund will contest the Supercup 2016 to lift the first title of the season. The match will take place on Sunday 14 August at 20:30 CEST (18:30GMT) at Dortmund's SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.

Bayern and Dortmund will go head-to-head for the Supercup trophy on 14 August.

16 - 17 August: After finishing fourth in 2015/16, Borussia Mönchengladbach will play in the UEFA Champions League qualifying play-offs. The first-leg matches are scheduled for 16/17 August and the return legs for 23/24 August. Alongside the Foals, Manchester City (who finished fourth in England), FC Porto (third in Portugal), FC Villarreal (fourth in Spain) and AS Roma (third in Italy) are already in the draw.

26 August: The Bundesliga returns! Bayern will get the new season underway with a home game at the Allianz Arena. Last year they beat Hamburger SV 5-0 in the campaign curtain-raiser; this year's opponent will be revealed on 29 June on
