Austrian midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger has joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen from Bundesliga rivals 1. FSV Mainz 05.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal valid until 30 June 2020 with Die Werkself, who were clearly impressed by his tireless running, tidy passing and battling qualities that contributed so significantly to the 05er’s and UEFA Europa League qualification.

"I had a great and successful time in Mainz," Baumgartlinger told Leverkusen's official website. "But now I'd like to take another step forwards. Leverkusen are an established Champions League club, and have been regularly involved in the competition for years. I'd like to test myself at that level against the best clubs and players in Europe. I'm very happy to get that chance at Leverkusen."

Baumgartlinger arrived at Mainz in 2011 from Austria Wien in his homeland, and went on to play 124 Bundesliga matches for the club, scoring twice.
