Upamecano, 18, has put pen to paper on a contract until 2021 at the Red Bull Arena.

"Dayot Upamecano has developed fantastically in the last year and a half at Salzburg," said Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick. "He's called attention to himself with excellent performances domestically and continentally, and he's a player who, with his potential and his style of play, fits perfectly into our style.

"We're really pleased that, despite numerous offers from some major international clubs, he has decided to join us," added Rangnick. "We're convinced that Dayot will significantly strengthen our squad."

Upamecano is the eighth player to make the move from Salzburg to Leipzig: last summer Ralph Hasenhüttl's side signed Benno Schmitz, Bernardo and Naby Keita from the Austrian champions.

The youngster, who joined Salzburg from French club Valenciennes FC in 2015, has made 21 appearances this season.
