The 27-year-old linked up with his new team-mates on Thursday after signing a contract with the Royal Blues until 2020, with Schalke also finalising the signing of Holger Badstuber on a six-month loan deal from FC Bayern München.

“I want to write the next chapter of my career,“ said Burgstaller to schalke04.de. “Schalke are a big club and I've already had good experiences with the stadium and fans. I'll be completely committed from the very beginning and do my all to help the team to success.“

Burgstaller joined Nürnberg from Cardiff City FC in January 2015. He went on to score 34 goals in 70 appearances for the Franconian outfit, including a league-leading 14 during the first half of the 2016/17 Bundesliga 2 campaign. The Villach native previously represented Austrian clubs FC Kärnten, SC Wiener Neustadt and SK Rapid Wien.

His arrival comes as a timely boost for a Schalke side who travelled to their winter training camp in Benidorm, Spain, with just one fit senior striker in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Franco Di Santo and Breel Embolo are all currently sidelined through injury.
