- Leverkusen concede last-gasp equaliser in Monaco.
- Chicharito scores 100th goal in European club football.
- Bayer with two points from as many games in Group E.
Goals: 0-1 Chicharito (74'), 1-1 Glik (90+4')
The lessons learned from the 2-2 draw with PFC CSKA Moskva on Matchday 1, Leverkusen gave virtually nothing away in an encouraging first-half display. Die Werkself hunted in packs when not in possession and moved the ball with tremendous efficiency when they did, and were very nearly rewarded for their sterling efforts late in the half. Chicharito fashioned a yard of space in the Monaco area, but goalkeeper Daniel Subasic got down well to push the ball around his right-hand post.
Leverkusen's persistence told in the 74th minute when Chicharito headed in a cross from substitute Admir Mehmedi to bring up his 100th competitive goal since moving to Europe from Guadalajara six years ago. Bayer appeared on course for a first win in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage and a first clean sheet in the competition since last term's play-off win over SS Lazio, only for Monaco's Kamil Glik to fire an unstoppable half-volley beyond the reach of Bernd Leno in the fourth minute of added time.
Man of the match
Chicharito showed why he has scored so many goals at this level with a well-taken header. As long as he keeps finding the net, Leverkusen have every chance of progressing to the next round.
Leverkusen were desperately unlucky not to come away from the game with the win, but their all-round performance will give them plenty of encouragement going into their double-header with Tottenham Hotspur FC.
- Chicharito has scored 100 competitive goals for European clubs (59 for Manchester United FC, nine for Real Madrid CF and 32 for Leverkusen).
- Fourteen of Chicharito's century of European goals have come in the Champions League.
- Monaco equalised with their first shot on target of the match.
