Newly-crowned German champions FC Bayern München have confirmed the signing of FIFA World Cup-winning defender Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

Subject to completing a medical check, Hummels will join Bayern on 1 July 2016, the club for whom he made his Bundesliga debut before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2008.

"We are delighted that Mats Hummels has decided to join FC Bayern," said Executive Board Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "Mats is one of the best central defenders in the world and will improve the quality of our team even further."

Hummels had assumed the role of captain at Borussia Dortmund at the start of the season.

In eight-and-a-half years in Dortmund, Hummels won two Bundesliga titles, the DFB Cup and reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League final, eventually losing to Bayern.

"After so many successful years at BVB, it wasn’t an easy decision," emphasised Hummels. "I am and always have been proud to wear the Dortmund shirt and to be part of this extraordinary side."

Hummels, who came up through the ranks at Bayern and whose family live in Munich, still has unfinished business in Dortmund however and is looking to sign off in style against his future employers.

"Before I return to my hometown in the summer, we still have one big, common goal: to bring the DFB Cup back to Dortmund and celebrate with BVB fans," he said. "From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank my teammates, all the staff and the fans for this long and wonderful time in black and yellow."

Dortmund pushed Bayern all the way in the Bundesliga this season and the two sides will meet in Berlin on 21 May in the DFB Cup final in what will be Hummels' last match in a Dortmund shirt.
