Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from CA Osasuna on a five-year contract valid from 1 July 2016.

'I feel honoured'

The 19-year-old plays in central midfield for the Spanish second division club and has so far made 22 appearances this season, scoring one goal. In summer 2015 he was part of Spain’s U-19 squad that won the European Championship.

“Borussia Dortmund are one of the best clubs in Europe,” Merino told BVB’s official website upon signing the deal on Monday. “I feel honoured that I’ll soon be able to play for Dortmund, a club that has a special way of playing football, in an impressive stadium in front of the biggest attendance in Europe and in front of loyal fans who create a wonderful atmosphere.”

Sporting director Michael Zorc described Merino as “a huge talent from Spain’s football academy,” adding: “We’re delighted we could complete the transfer in time for the new season.”
