“I feel I’m in very good hands here in Dortmund, in a sporting and in a personal sense,” said Weigl, whose original deal was set to expire in 2019, in an interview with the club website. “This was a logical decision for me and I didn’t have to think it over for long before I decided to extend my contract.”

The 21-year-old midfielder has been with BVB since 2015 when he transferred from TSV 1860 München. Over the past season and a half, Weigl’s stock has risen fast. He has become both a mainstay in the Dortmund side and a Germany international, and travelled with the reigning world champions to UEFA EURO 2016.

“Julian has character which belies his youth," said Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc. "In a very short time he found his footing at BVB, playing outstandingly. And his development as a player is still just getting started. We’re very pleased he’s decided to commit his long-term future to us."
