Tottenham Hotspur FC 0-1 Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Goals: 0-1 Kevin Kampl (65')

Searching for their first Champions League win of the season, Leverkusen acquitted themselves well at Wembley, even if clear-cut chances were at a premium for much of the first half. Roger Schmidt's side matched their Premier Leaguer counterparts in all areas of the pitch and went agonisingly close to taking the lead through Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, whose goal-bound strike was deflected into the side-netting.

Chicharito was at it again in the second half, but this time it was a fine double save from Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris that kept the lively Mexican at bay. Leverkusen continued to trouble the home defence, however, and their persistence was rewarded as Charles Aranguiz's deflected strike fell kindly for Kampl to sweep home. Eric Dier struck the woodwork late on, but Leverkusen held on for three priceless points.

Kampl has not missed a second of competitive action for Bayer this season.

Man of the match

Kampl excelled once again in midfield for Leverkusen. The Slovenia international worked his socks off and showed great composure for the goal. Is there a more complete midfielder in Europe right now?

Talking point

After dropping points in games they should arguably have won on Matchdays 1, 2 and 3, Leverkusen showed great maturity in the English capital, recording a victory that gives them every chance of joining Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern München in the Round of 16.

Match stats

  • Kampl scored his second Champions League goal.
  • Chicharito had more shots on goal than any other player (six).
  • Benjamin Henrichs won a match-high 20 challenges.
