Sandwiched between spells at Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Dortmund, Hrubesch won three Bundesliga titles and a European Cup with Hamburg. He scored 136 goals in 224 Bundesliga appearances all told, before going into management in 1986. The Hamm-born striker also won the UEFA 1980 European Championships and finished second at the 1982 FIFA World Cup with Germany. Here are a few more career statistics on Das Kopfball-Ungeheuer (the header monster)...

  • Hrubesch finished Hamburg's title-winning 1981/82 Bundesliga campaign as top scorer on 27 goals.
  • He scored the winning penalty that knocked France out of the 1982 World Cup in the semi finals.
  • As a coach, he has lifted the UEFA European Under-19 and Under-21 title with his native Germany.
