Mönchengladbach - Borussia Mönchengladbach have appointed Andre Schubert as caretaker coach as they seek a permanent successor to Lucien Favre.

Favre: End of an era

Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl told the media at a press conference on Monday that Schubert would be moved up from his current role as coach of the club's U23 side to take charge of the first team following Favre's resignation.

Favre, who joined Gladbach in February 2011, quit following the Matchday 5 1-0 defeat to Rhine derby rivals 1. FC Köln. The result left last season's third-placed finishers bottom of the table and without a point after five games for the first time in the club's history.

"I'm very sad an incredible era has come to an end like this," Eberl told media after seeing Favre first save the club from relegation before qualifying them for the UEFA Champions League group stage for the very first time last season, earning himself the Bundesliga Coach of the Year award. "We told Favre we are 100 per cent convinced he is, well, was, the right coach for us."

Gladbach to host Augsburg

He added: "It was an amazing four-and-a-half years. I am incredibly sad Favre is no longer our coach."

Schubert's first task will be to prepare his players for Wednesday's Matchday 6 encounter at home to FC Augsburg.

The 44-year-old was head coach of FC St. Pauli for the 2011/12 season and narrowly failed to gain promotion from Bundesliga 2. He left the Hamburg-based club seven games into the following season after a mediocre start. Schubert only joined Gladbach this summer.
