Bayern Munich defender Javi Martinez is set to miss the remainder of the season after fracturing his left collarbone.

The 28-year-old sat out Saturday’s 1-0 win over Darmstadt due to illness and he will now play no further part this term after suffering a fresh injury while hiking in the mountains on a mini-break in his native Spain on Sunday. He underwent corrective surgery in Munich on Tuesday.

Martinez, who is in his fifth season at the club, has scored once in 25 Bundesliga appearances this season and he also netted in last month’s DFB Cup semi-final defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The Spanish international has had his share of injury problems since moving to Bavaria, having missed the entire 2014/2015 campaign when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a DFB Supercup match against Dortmund in August 2014.

The versatile player, who can also operate in central midfield, became Bayern’s record signing when he joined the club from Athletic Bilbao in August 2012.

The record German champions are also without goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich for the rest of the campaign.
