Sandro Wagner sent in the first shot of the game after just a handful of minutes, but it was Augsburg asking all the questions with Halil Altintop heading wide and Philipp Max also going close. The hosts' best chance came from an Andrej Kramaric free-kick, but Andreas Luthe was on hand to make his first save of the game.

Wagner had another good effort early in the second half, sending his shot over the crossbar before Mark Uth tested Luthe. Kevin Vogt also went close as Hoffenheim turned up the heat. Kramaric hit the inside of the post before hitting the outside of the woodwork on an afternoon which appeared cursed for the hosts, who will now start next season earlier with a play-off for the Champions League, while Augsburg celebrated survival.

Man of the match

Fresh from his call-up to the Germany squad for the Confederations Cup, Sandro Wagner was keen to show why he deserves to be in the national team. He may not have scored, but he was always the most likely on the field to do so, forging a fine partnership with Kramaric.
