It wasn’t long until the home side took the lead when John Brooks headed home Valentin Stocker’s mishit shot following a corner after just 12 minutes. Shortly after, captain Vedad Ibisevic came close to doubling the home side’s advantage after a one-two with Salomon Kalou but was denied by Marwin Hitz. At the other end, Rune Jarstein was barely called into action in the Hertha goal. Berlin did finally double their lead before the break when Kalou squared the ball to Stocker to tap in after excellent hold-up play by Ibisevic.
Man of the match
A goal and an assist for Valentin Stocker capped off a solid display by the experienced Switzerland international to return the capital club to winning ways and keep their European ambitions on track.
Talking point
Whilst Hertha are heading for Europe, Augsburg are at serious risk of heading down to the Bundesliga 2. A run of six games without a win has seen them drop into the relegation play-off place and at serious risk with a resurgent Ingolstadt hot on their tails.
