Cologne - Fabian Johnson and Granit Xhaka are doubts for Borussia Mönchengladbach's Matchday 9 meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt after suffering respective thigh and ankle injuries whilst on international duty.

Xhaka injury blow

Johnson was substituted by US coach Jürgen Klinsmann during extra-time of his country's 3-2 defeat to Mexico in the CONCACAF Cup final on Saturday.

A calf injury sidelined the winger between Matchdays 2 and 5 before he returned to help Gladbach to three successive victories, including scoring his club's first goal in the 4-2 Matchday 6 win over FC Augsburg, following five straight defeats with which to start the season.

Xhaka went off late in Switzerland's UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying win over Estonia on Monday, and has been diagnosed with a ligament tear in his right ankle. It is the same joint to which the 23-year-old, who has captained Gladbach in recent games, suffered a similar injury last season.

Gladbach interim coach Andre Schubert is already without Patrick Herrmann and Nico Schulz for Saturday evening's encounter at the Commerzbank Arena after they both suffered knee ligament injuries within the last week.
