Freiburg will play either Icelandic side Valur Reykjavik or NK Domzale of Slovenia in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.

Christian Streich’s men are on the cusp of their first European campaign since the 2013/14 campaign after an incredible first season back in the Bundesliga that saw the Black Forest club finish seventh, three points clear of Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“Domzale have a good level technically,” says Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “We’ve had their youth team players here before. Icelandic football, meanwhile, puts more emphasis on technique. They’ve made a lot of progress, as we saw at last year’s European Championship [Iceland got the quarter-finals, beating England on the way].”

Domzale lead Valur 2-1, with the second leg of their tie next Thursday. Freiburg will host the first leg of their tie at the Schwarzwald-Stadion on 27 July, with the return fixture on 3 August.
