Freiburg's hopes of reaching the group stages of the UEFA Europa League are over after losing 2-0 to Slovenian outfit NK Domzale in Thursday’s third qualifying round second leg.

Leading 1-0 through Nils Petersen’s first-leg goal, the visitors nearly extended their aggregate lead in bizarre circumstances when Gaber Dobrovoljc’s clearance struck the former Bayern Munich man in the face, but Domzale goalkeeper Dejan Milic was able to gather the loose ball.

The hosts were awarded a penalty three minutes into the second half when Çağlar Söyüncü brought down Matija Sirok inside the box. Senijad Ibricic sent Alexander Schwolow the wrong way to level the aggregate score, before Lovro Bizjak poked home to seal the Slovenian Cup winners’ place in the play-off round of the competition.
