Switzerland international midfielder Gelson Fernandes has joined Eintracht Frankfurt from Rennes, signing a contract that will run until 2019 with the Eagles.

The 30-year-old defensive midfielder, who has also turned out for Manchester City, Leicester, Udinese and Sporting Lisbon among others, is delighted to return to the Bundesliga, where he represented Freiburg in the 2013/14 season.

“Of course I’m very happy that I can play in one of the best leagues in the world,” said the 57-times capped Swiss. “Eintracht are a traditional club with great ambition, and I would like to help them build on what they have accomplished so far.”

“We expect Gelson to provide extra support in midfield,” said Eintracht’s sporting director Fredi Bobic. “He brings a lot of experience and will give our game more stability. Gelson will be a real asset to us.”
