Bundesliga 2 clubs among most popular in Europe
Further proof of German football’s pulling power has been revealed with the news that the country is home to three of the top five best-supported second-tier teams in Europe this season.
Hamburg, who were relegated from the top flight for their first time in their history in 2017/18, lead the way in Europe with an incredible average attendance of 50,205. That means that over 251,000 people have gone to see one of the Red Shorts’ five home games so far this term - including 57,000 for the derby game against St. Pauli.
Not far behind them are Bundesliga 2 leaders Cologne, also demoted last season, whose attendance for home matches is averaging at 48,700 so far.
English Championship clubs Leeds and Aston Villa come next, but St. Pauli round out the top five, with an average crowd of 29,444 making their way through the turnstiles at the Millerntor-Stadion.
Over a quarter of the way through the Bundesliga 2 campaign, Dynamo Dresden are also among the top-10 most popular second-tier clubs on matchdays – with an average of 28,120 people paying into their five home games so far.
With affordable ticket prices and standing areas among the attractions, Germany’s top flight is also the best-attended league in Europe.
The average crowd size was over 44,000 in the Bundesliga in 2017/18, up from 41,000 the year before.
