Thorgan Hazard scored a dramatic injury-time penalty for Borussia Mönchengladbach to condemn Hannover to their first defeat of the season.

Gladbach 2-1 Hannover

Goals: 1-0 Ginter (67’), 1-1 Harnik (71’), 2-1 Hazard (pen. 94')

Raffael forced visiting keeper Philipp Tschauner into action on eight minutes but Hannover also demonstrated why they had conceded only two goals before this game. The longer the first half wore on, however, the more chinks appeared in their armour. Matthias Ginter headed over and US international Fabian Johnson also went close before Gladbach captain Lars Stindl fizzed a volley inches wide on 38 minutes.

After the interval, Hazard cut in from the right and drew an awkward-looking save from Tschauner and just past the hour mark, Stindl struck a weak shot on goal when played through by Mickael Cuisance. Jannik Vestergaard then failed to get enough purchase on a header but Hannover failed to heed the warning and Ginter sliced home after getting free from an inviting Cuisance free-kick. Harnik rose high to meet Pirmin Schwegler’s corner just four minutes later to level but the Austrian then struck the bar with the goal gaping with four minutes left. Hannover were punished deep in injury-time when Vincenzo Grifo was taken down in the area and Hazard sent Tschauner the wrong way from the spot.

Man of the Match

French teenager Mickael Cuisance impressed on his first start in the Bundesliga but Hazard always looked threatening and kept his cool at the death to hand Gladbach their third win in seven.
