FC Schalke 04 remain without win on the road this season after being held to a 1-1 draw away to FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon in a game memorable for a pair of eye-catching goals.

Schalke coach Markus Weinzierl received a warm reception from the home crowd on his return to Augsburg – the club he departed in the summer – but his former charges were far less welcoming once the match kicked off. Augsburg denied their visitors any time on the ball, aggressively closing down the spaces in a fiercely contested first half with no real goalscoring chances at either end.

The game opened up more after the break and Schalke took the lead thanks to a wonderful strike from newcomer Nabil Bentaleb, who rifled in a spectacular effort from outside the area. The Royal Blues began playing with far greater confidence and should have doubled their advantage through Yevhen Konoplyanka, a miss they would come to rue when Daniel Baier lashed in a thumping long range strike of his own to give Augsburg a share of the points.

Talking Point

While this was not the victory they will have wanted, Schalke at least picked up their first point on the road this season following three away defeats at the start of the campaign.
