Stuttgart - Borussia Mönchengladbach moved further away from the relegation zone with their second successive win, overcoming a valiant VfB Stuttgart side 3-1 on Matchday 7.

The game started at high tempo, with both sides pressing well. It was Gladbach who struck first, after a Raffael free kick found the head of Granit Xhaka in the 17th minute. Three minutes later, it was 2-0 after Christian Gentner's attempted clearance directed the ball into his own net. Stuttgart were not cowed by the deficit, however, and kept up the attacking pace. They were rewarded when Daniel Didavi was brought down in the area, leaving Daniel Ginczek to convert the penalty.

After the break, Stuttgart became more enthusiastic in their search for an equaliser, pushing Gladbach further and further back. Several huge chances went begging however, including a gilt-edged opportunity from close range for Alexandru Maxim and in the dying moments, it was the visitors who broke to score the final goal, Raffael slotting the ball past Przemyslaw Tyton to finish off a classic counter-attack, and with it, the game.

Man of the match

Geoffrey Serey Die may have ended up on the losing side, but he was fearless at the heart of the Stuttgart midfield, driving his team forward in a valiant second-half performance.

Talking Point

Rainer Bonhof says that Gladbach are in no rush to find a long-term replacement for Lucien Favre. This game shwoed why: under caretaker coach Andre Schubert, Gladbach have rediscovered both their goalscoring form and defensive determination.
