The Augsburg crowd were stunned into silence inside seven minutes when Jhon Cordoba rose unmarked to power home Yunus Malli's inch-perfect corner. Mainz defender Daniel Brosinski had already gone close prior to the goal and it was the visitors who continued to carry the greater threat, with Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz denying Karim Onisiwo and Levin Öztunali driving narrowly wide.

Augsburg showed a vast improvement after the restart, however, and should have been level in the 63rd minute, but Dominik Kohr was unable to direct Raul Bobadilla's fierce right-wing cross on target from close range. Augsburg left-back Konstantinos Stafylidis drove in the equaliser ten minutes later, only for Mainz to go straight up the other end and restore their lead through Malli's glancing header. Mainz substitute Yoshinori Muto capped a mad-cap spell with his second goal of the season, with a late red card for Mainz debutant Jose Rodriguez coming too late for Augsburg to influence the result.
Man of the Match
Malli drifted in and out of the game, but was at his decisive best in the final third with a goal, assist and big hand in Mainz's match-winner.
