Stefan Aigner held his nerve to secure three vital points in the battle to avoid the drop as Eintracht Frankfurt triumphed 2-1 over local rivals SV Darmstadt 98.
Defeat may all but have condemned Frankfurt to Bundesliga 2 and they fell behind to an early goal in the relegation six-pointer. Makoto Hasebe grabbed an equaliser early on in the second half as Frankfurt took the game to their hosts.
Then, with just minutes remaining, Eintracht secured the win in dramatic fashion. After coming on as a substitute at half-time, Stefan Aigner slotted home a volley at the back post to add a further twist to an enthralling relegation battle that looks set to go right down to the wire.
