Wolfsburg are without suspended captain Luiz Gustavo so, with Jeffrey Bruma still out through injury, Philipp Wollscheid will come into central defence. Attacker Daniel Didavi is hoping to shake off the thigh problem that kept him out of Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Bayer Leverkusen but his availability is far from certain.

Lukas Kübler and Julian Schuster may well earn starts for Freiburg after their introduction at half-time in their 5-2 defeat at home to Werder Bremen at the weekend coincided with an improved showing after the break. Defensive midfielder Nicolas Höfler has resumed light training but is not being considered for the midweek game.
