Borussia Mönchengladbach will be without Austrian centre-back Martin Stranzl for Saturday’s hotly anticipated Rhine derby with 1. FC Köln.

'Derbies are always explosive'

The 35-year-old, who only returned to action earlier this month, is set for another spell on the sidelines after tearing muscle fibres in his right calf in training on Wednesday.

Fellow Austrian defender Martin Hinteregger also missed Wednesday’s workout with flu, but Swiss defender Nico Elvedi is available again following illness and could feature against Köln on Matchday 22.

"We're all really looking forward to the game," Gladbach winger Fabian Johnson told club website borussia.de ahead of the 84th Rhine derby of the Bundesliga era. "Everyone is desperate to play from the start and that's obviously reflected in training. Derbies are always explosive […] We really want to beat Köln."
