A first half of few chances saw Darmstadt gradually assert themselves with more possession, but it was the visitors who carved out the best opportunity. Halil Altintop, playing against twin brother Hamit, placed a fine pass for Bobadilla to race on to but goalkeeper Michael Esser denied the onrushing Augsburg striker by smothering the ball right at his feet.

The hosts were ahead early in the second half, with Marcel Heller on hand from close range but the lead did not last long, with Paul Verhaegh scoring from the penalty spot after Alexander Milosevic had clipped Dominik Kohr inside the area. Bobadilla and Darmstadt substitute Terrence Boyd both had chances for either side, but it was Augsburg’s Paraguayan who sealed the win, dinking the ball over Esser after out-muscling Aytac Sulu.

Man of the Match

Raul Bobadilla showed some real quality just when it was needed to grab the winner, having been a handful for Augsburg all afternoon with eight shots on goal.

Talking Point

Despite being on home turf, where they have collected all their points this season, Darmstadt could not turn it to their advantage and yet another defeat means they are looking like being cut adrift. They will be looking to the trip to SV Werder Bremen next weekend to earn their first away points of the season to keep them in touch with FC Ingolstadt 04 immediately above them.
