Die Schanzer, who had beaten RB Leipzig and Bayer 04 Leverkusen in their previous two league encounters, fell behind when Marcel Tisserand brought down Vincenzo Grifo inside the penalty area, allowing Florian Niederlechner to convert from the spot. The 1. FSV Mainz 05 loanee doubled his tally for the evening six minutes later, latching on to Janik Harberer’s flick-on before coolly sliding past Martin Hansen in the Ingolstadt goal.

A sumptuous Marcel Suttner free-kick reduced the arrears eight minutes into the second half, before Almog Cohen was denied by a superb one-handed save by Freiburg keeper Alexander Schwolow in stoppage time. It was not to be for the hosts, though, who end the calendar year in the automatic relegation places. Freiburg, meanwhile, climb above Leverkusen and Mainz into eighth.
