Gladbach and Wolfsburg were both in need of some Christmas cheer in this final league outing of 2016, and it was the Wolves who took the game by the scruff of the neck. In the third minute, Maximilian Arnold got away down the left flank, and whipped a ball across for Daniel Caligiuri to stab home. Wolfsburg should have made it 2-0 when Yann Sommer passed the ball straight to Julian Draxler, but the Gladbach keeper recovered to save from the German international, and Paul Seguin's follow-up attempt sailed just over the bar.

Gladbach hit back not long after the break, as Thorgan Hazard came jinking down the left and pulled back for captain Lars Stindl – his effort was parried by Diego Benaglio, but Hazard raced in to pick up the rebound and slot home. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Mario Gomez restored Wolfsburg's lead, latching onto a fine through ball from Draxler, shimmying past Sommer and rolling in for 2-1. Oscar Wendt had the best chance to equalise for the Foals, but fired just over the bar as Andre Schubert's side slumped to their eighth defeat of the season.
