Borussia Dortmund 1-1 FC Augsburg

Goals: 0-1 Ji (33'), 1-1 Dembele (47')

If Dortmund were buoyed by the news of Julian Weigl signing a contract extension earlier in the day they did not show it initially, with their build-up play often lacking its characteristic speed and flair. Indeed, a mistake in midfield led to Augsburg going in front: the visitors poured forward on the break and Dong-Won Ji finished at the second attempt after Roman Weidenfeller saved his first effort.

That prompted a furious response from BVB early in the second half and they equalised almost immediately through Ousmane Dembele's smart finish. It was largely one-way traffic towards the Augsburg goal after that, but it was not until late in the game that Dortmund could have scored a winner, as Marwin Hitz made a smart save from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before Andre Schürrle fired the rebound wide.Ultimately, however, the hosts will be disappointed to end the year with a third straight draw.

Dong-Won Ji (l.) opened the scoring in the first half following a swift Augsburg counter-attack.

Man of the match

Dembele was again the brightest of Dortmund's array of stars. His pace and close control were mesmerising at times and his contribution was decisive once more, securing a point with a well-taken finish.

Talking point

Dortmund have only lost one of their last ten Bundesliga outings, but the six draws in that time have seen them fall behind the league leaders. With key players expected to be fit again next year, they will be confident of closing the gap.

Match stats

  • Ji is Augsburg's top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with three goals.
  • Dembele has netted four times in the Bundesliga for BVB, twice with his left foot and twice with his right.
  • Augsburg collectively covered two kilometres more than Dortmund (112.73 to 110.63)
