After a fortnight without domestic football due to the international break, the Bundesliga returns this weekend, with another nine games to get your teeth into.

Accordingly, bundesliga.com has picked out five of Matchday 13's tastiest clashes...

Schalke host Bayern

The standout game of the weekend takes place on Saturday night, when champions FC Bayern München will be looking to extend a five-point gap at the top of the league with a victory at FC Schalke 04, an encounter with a multitude of sub-plots. Former Royal Blue Manuel Neuer returns to the club that made him a star, while youngsters Leroy Sane, Max Meyer and Leon Goretzka line up against Bayern's Joshua Kimmich, just days after the four of them starred for Germany’s U-21 side. Throw in the fact that Bayern failed to beat Schalke last season after winning the previous seven league encounters by an aggregate score of 23-2 and you have all the ingredients for a very spicy affair indeed.

Will Chicharito’s streak continue?

After a relatively slow start to his Leverkusen career, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez now cannot stop scoring. The insatiable Mexico international has found the net in his last six appearances, bagging eight goals in total, and will be confident of continuing that run when Bayer take to the field at the Commerzbank-Arena. Frankfurt became the only side to take points off the champions this season when they held Bayern to a goalless draw in their last home game, but after another stalemate at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Matchday 12, Armin Veh’s side will be out to rediscover their shooting boots on Saturday.

Newcomers go head-to-head

FC Ingolstadt 04 and SV Darmstadt 98 have already proven many observers wrong in the campaign. Die Schanzer boast the league’s and have lost just four games, while Dirk Schuster's Lilies have won at UEFA Champions League participants Bayer 04 Leverkusen and taken points off Dortmund and Schalke. Both clubs will no doubt remind viewers on Sunday why this is now justifiably the 881st different top-flight fixture.

Derby of the carnival clubs

Both 1. FC Köln and 1. FSV Mainz 05 warmed up for carnival season in the best way possible on Matchday 12, the Billy Goats grabbing a 2-1 win at Rhineland rivals Leverkusen and Mainz seeing off ten-man Wolfsburg at the Coface Arena. After the top flight's two-week hiatus, these two clubs now have an opportunity to keep the feel-good factor going. Regardless of the result this week, expect a cauldron of noise and a colourful atmosphere at the RheinEnergieSTADION.
