Bayern Munich have confirmed that midfielder Javi Martinez has suffered an injury to his right shoulder joint, but the Bundesliga champions stopped short of putting a timescale on his return.

Restored to holding midfield in the first game under Jupp Heynckes, Martinez was one of Bayern’s star performers in the 5-0 win over Freiburg before landing heavily on his right shoulder in the second half.

The Spaniard received treatment on the pitch before attempting to continue, but was substituted in the 70th minute still holding his shoulder and in visible pain. The record champions have announced that the 29-year-old will be treated by the club’s medical staff, but it will not require surgery and he will undergo a rehabilitation plan as well as individual training.

After the game, Heynckes praised the Spanish midfield duo of Martinez and Thiago: “They were both impressive in the middle. Javi showed his defensive side in midfield, while Thiago impressed with his creativity, possession and vision. They were extraordinary.”
