Cologne beaten by BATE in the UEFA Europa League
Cologne remain winless in UEFA Europa League Group H after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to BATE Borisov on Thursday.
BATE Borisov 1-0 Cologne
Goal: 1-0 (Rios 55')
The Billy Goats were the more adventurous of the two teams in the first half and very nearly took the lead when Simon Zoller’s header was brilliantly saved by Denis Scherbitski in the BATE goal. Milos Jojic tried his luck from a tight angle moments later but could only find the side-netting.
The second half began in lively fashion, but it was BATE who opened the scoring when Rios drilled home from deep inside the penalty area after Cologne had failed to clear their lines. Substitute Leonardo Bittencourt went close to salvaging a point for Peter Stöger’s side, but there was no way past Scherbitski as Effzeh slumped to their third consecutive defeat in Group H.
