Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 have confirmed the signing of Johannes Geis from 1. FSV Mainz 05.

'It’s a special feeling'

The midfielder, who is currently part of the Germany squad at the UEFA U-21 European Championship in the Czech Republic, has signed a four-year deal with the Royal Blues.

"Schalke, the stadium and the fans have always fascinated me," explained the 21-year-old. "It’s a special feeling to play in the Veltins Arena and I’m certainly going to give it my all. The conversations I had with Andre Breitenreiter and Horst Heldt convinced me that something new is forming at the club, and that’s something I want to be part of."

"We’re delighted that such a coveted young player has decided in favour of Schalke," explained Heldt, the club’s director of sport and communications. "Johannes possesses enormous quality. His dangerous set-pieces, accurate passing and ability to bring other players into the game have made him into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Bundesliga. Indeed, the fact that he has already even filled in as captain at Mainz shows that he can and intends to take on responsibility."

Geis, who will officially join the Gelsenkirchen outfit with the opening of the transfer window on 1 July, came to Mainz in 2013 from SpVgg Greuther Fürth and made 34 Bundesliga appearances in 2014/15, recording four goals and four assists.
