Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 have been rocked by the news that midfielder Julian Draxler will need an operation on a hamstring injury picked up against FC Augsburg on Matchday 10.

The 21-year-old Germany international lasted just four minutes before he was replaced by Chinedu Obasi in Schalke's 1-0 win against the Bavarians at the Veltins Arena on Friday. The Royal Blues confirmed on Monday afternoon that Draxler will undergo surgery in Stuttgart in the coming days.

'A serious injury'

Sporting director Horst Heldt revealed after the match that the attacking midfielder had suffered a "serious tear" to his muscle, adding that he "won't be playing any further part" in the Hinrunde.

The Royal Blues are currently eighth in the table and are second in their UEFA Champions League group. Draxler has made eight appearances in the league this season, scoring twice and providing one assist.
