Munich - FC Bayern München have completed the signing of Morocco international centre-back Medhi Benatia from Serie A side AS Roma.

Welcome addition

The 27-year-old agreed terms on a five-year-deal at the reigning Bundesliga champions, before passing a medical on Wednesday evening. "It's a great opportunity for me," said Benatia. "I'm playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world now."

The Reds were

forced to delve into the transfer market

again following the

knee injury sustained by Javi Martinez

, who was to be a key component of coach Pep Guardiola's desire to implement a three-man back line at the club. "I'm delighted Mehdi has decided to join us," said sporting director Matthias Sammer. "He's strong, tough in the tackle and a good passer of the ball. He has all the attributes to help him succeed at FC Bayern." Benatia, who will wear the number five shirt at the Allianz Arena, becomes the Bavarians' fifth summer recuit, following the arrivals of Robert Lewandowski, Juan Bernat, Sebastian Rode, and Pepe Reina.
